Allergo - Dark Necromancy (4/6/02)
Take four guys with an average age of 15, add some monster sounding guitars and a dose of Death Metal vocals and you get Perth's newest rock band, Allergo. Although giving a pretty broad insight into the band's significant (especially for a bunch of young guys) writing abilty fifteen tracks is way too much for a demo. "Demo Listen" has focussed on the first three and would encourage the band to pick what they see as their three best songs and send only these to venues, record companies, promoters, potential managers and anyone else that can help them. It'd be easiest to put Allergo into a death metal pigeon-hole, but musically there's a bit more going on as shown by the interesting riffs that power the excellent first track, Noise Machine. A melodic and tension-building guitar and drum intro to Darklight, the second track, opens out into a great crashing, chugging guitar number with plenty honk. The lead guitar's a bit weedy and widdly, but that's a minor criticism that could easily be fixed by tweaking a couple of knobs on the guitar amp and holding back the technique a little. Third up 360 Blindside, is another good track but at nearly six minutes too long for a demo. The death metal lyrics are dropped are peppered with much lighter sounding quips that would sound equally at home in South Park or Beavis And Butthead. Of all the other tracks, Viva Los Mexico is one of our favorites with lyrics that pay tongue-in-check tribute to some of our favorite tex-mex restaurants. All the tracks would appear to have been recorded live and fairly hastily at Perth's Clearwater studio. Once the three tracks have been chosen, another trip to the studio concentrating on just these would pay dividends - especially if packaged with well-written and good photo. At 15 years old, many folk are just starting to learn an instrument - at beast they're realizing that they can play contemporary music and don't have to stick to the tired old regime of bashing out "She'll be coming round the mountain" on a duff guitar or out of tune piano while a blue-rinse teacher hovers menacingly. Allergo bring new hope and look set to be an inspiration to their peers. Allergo's Tom, Matt, Graham and James have got a long way towards mastering their instruments, writing a bunch of songs anyone would be proud of and - given the opportunity - will hopefully be gigging near you soon.
