Allergo-Summer
05
Allergo are a four-piece hardcore metal band hailing from Perth. The group formed back in 2002 and since then have managed to suppot the likes of Cult Of Luna, Johnny Truant and Shai Hulud among others. the band have played throughout Scotland, taking in a performance on the T Break Stage at T In the Park back in 2004. The group have also received airplay on Radio One (where they reached number 6 on the rock/punk unsigned demos competition) and Beat 106. The even managed to bag an interview on BBC3 as part of their coverage of T In The Park. Right from the opening number, Run For It, Allergo set their intentions out, the batter their instruments into submission whilst ripping their vocal chords apart with an impressive display of screams and growls that literally drip with anger and intensity. Further on into this CD the band throw in time and key changes taking their material into new realms, for example the devastating The Ascension has the band taking their foot of the extreme peddle for awhile as they explore a more melodic instrumental passage before returning with a huge down tuned riff and a barrage of drums. In complete contrast Zack Morris is the ultimate in straight forward brutality, a track that lasts just over two minute yet leaves an ever lasting impression. This Time...I Think I've Gone To Far is a longer number and once again sees the band experiment more, after a brutal verse and chorus the guitars and bass drop out completely leaving just a simplistic beat before the band throw in some wonderful effects laden guitar to create a sparse yet wonderous landscape that's almost lulling and calm before the heavy riffs and vocals crash in once more and lay waste to the beauty that was hinted at, before returning to the lush ambient sounds once more towards the end of the song. Following on from This Time.... are a couple of untitled tracks, the first of which is a beautiful acoustic guitar led instrumental that showcases a completely different side to Allergro, there's some wonderful finger picking to begin with and then as the song draws on an almost orchestral influence joins the mix. The band finish on a nine minute plus track that once again features loads of acoustic guitars and ambient landscapes that dip and flourish bringing to mind an acoustic version of Mogwai, in the fact it's akin to post rock without the rock. Allergo are an intriguing band they seem to be equally at home playing both uncomprimising brutal hardcore metal and wonderous acousitc ambient workouts and they are equally impressive at both styles. This young band really stand out from your typical metalliic hardcore groups, they have an obvious desire to expand their horizons and they must be commended for that. This is an impressive starting point for a band could easily go in a multitude of directions, I'm already looking forward to hearing what they do for their follow up. If you like something brutal but slso somthing with diversity then Allergo will be right up your street.
